Welcome to the Global Sojourns Giving Circle Update!

Below you'll find updates on Ray of Hope and Tusa Munyandi but first we want to update you on our Giving Circle.

A GSGC strategy meeting was held in Arlington, VA from Dec. 7th-11th.  Armed with communiques and verbal input from most of you along with input from specialists, we reviewed our model and activities from the past year and made some tweaks and plans for the future.  Thanks to each of you for providing input and feedback- it has been invaluable!

Based on your comments, here's what we have planned for the GSGC for the coming year:

  • For donations of $365 and up: donors can join educational calls, vote on projects to be funded and receive quarterly updates
  • Smaller donations are also welcome; donors will receive the quarterly updates
  • A guiding circle is being set up, comprised of Priscilla as founder, Linda as coordinator and several charter members; please let us know if you're interested in being part of this circle
  • Sub-circles include: grantmaking, education & communications, special projects and fundraising; we encourage everyone to take part; let us know what fits with your interests!
  • By-laws are being developed, thanks to Paige & Jerry!
  • Our goal is to raise $20,000 for granting in 2008
  • 3 educational conference calls/webinars will be offered
  • A regular update on the projects will be sent out quarterly
  • We're creating a flier about the GSGC that you can share with friends
  • Detailed information about the GSGC and the projects we support will be on a webpage soon
  • We'll again be teaming up with The Clarence Foundation;  they'll handle the administration of the donations and provide guidance; these costs will again be covered by Global Sojourns so your donations will all go directly to the projects in Africa
  • The core component of why the GSGC exists remains unchanged: to support children (especially girls) with getting a quality education and to support wildlife conservation by providing funds to grassroots, sustainable, well managed programs in sub-Saharan Africa while providing donors with education and a connection to the projects

Thanks to you who have sent in your donation for the coming year.  If you have not yet had the opportunity to do so, please send it in ASAP.  Make it payable to: The Clarence Foundation, 5310 James Avenue, Oakland, CA  94618.  Be sure to designate it for the Global Sojourns Giving Circle.  Thank you so much.  And remember, your donation is tax deductible!

Your feedback is always welcome and we encourage your participation in a circle and/or special project.   Just let us know what interests you!

Now onto the really important news....

Ray of Hope

Ray of Hope (RoH) wrote to us, saying "we are getting positive results in most areas everyday."

In October they held a successful workshop for 30 households on Income Generating Activities.  They monitored them in November and found the training helped the small business owners obtain needed skills and improve their small businesses, thus being able to better care for their children.

They are mentoring Tusa Munyandi (TM) staff and teaching two staff members how to use computers.  The classes are being held Monday through Friday.  RoH facilitated a workshop at a TM conference.  The participants were educated on a variety of topics, including HIV/AIDs.

For photos of the training, contact Linda and she will forward them to you.  They're inspiring!

Ernest Maombe of Tusa Munyandi (TM) was thrilled when he learned our Giving Circle conference call attendees discussed the possibility of helping TM obtain its own computer.

Ernest reports that the TM staff and volunteers are working hard to meet the goals they set in helping families earn funds to send their children to school.

He also reports that Ray of Hope has been extremely helpful in teaching TM new skills.

GSGC member Judy Macy recommends  Rivertown by Peter Hessler.  Follow the story of  a Peace Corps volunteer  assigned to teach in an area of China  along the Yangtze River- and arrives as the first foreigner in fifty years.

"It shows how one person who is able to keep an open mind can understand and accept a different culture's way of seeing things."  Judy Macy
