Welcome to the Global Sojourns Giving Circle Update!

co2offset

Dear Global Sojourns Giving Circle Members and Donors,

An article in today's newspaper described two American educated Kenyan brothers who built a health clinic in their small hometown. I feel so blessed that I too, with all of you, am able to do something worthwhile for people in Africa. Traveling to experience solely the food and sights no longer appeals to me. I love being able to conjoin those experiences with meeting and helping others in Africa through our Giving Circle. Our May GSGC trip was terrific and the positive energy is growing, with new links being made both in Zambia and the US.

In May, six members of our Giving Circle traveled to Livingstone, Zambia to visit the two organizations that we help fund.  The staff of Ray of Hope and  Tusa Munyandi arranged two full days of visits to micro-loan recipients at their places of business and visits with school children we assist.

Millennium Devolpment Goals

You have probably heard about the eight goals for our fellow human beings and our world, which were established in 2005 by the UN.  They are a practical and achievable set of targets for international development up to 2015. You can find more details about the goals on the web. Briefly they are:

Goal 1: to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Goal 2: to achieve universal primary education for children
Goal 3: to promote gender equality and empower women
Goal 4: to reduce child mortality
Goal 5: to improve maternal health
Goal 6: to combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
Goal 7: to ensure environmental sustainability
Goal 8: to create a global partnership for development

The Global Sojourns Giving Circle was developed to help provide educational opportunities for children, especially girls, in Africa. In doing so, GSGC is working to help meet several of the Millennium Development Goals.  It has been proven that educating girls helps reduce poverty, empowers women, reduces child mortality and improves health. Each of you is truly making a difference.

Guiding Principals

Our guiding principles, developed by Jerry Greenwald, were slightly revised, emailed to everyone and unanimously accepted by our voting members (annual donors of $365 or more.)  A heartfelt thank you to Jerry for his generous work.

Dolls Sent to Zambia

Our circle is growing.  Barbara Muczynski, the aunt/sister of several of our members is part of a sewing group that makes Rag Dolls 2 Love. We jumped at her offer to make dolls for children in Livingstone, who could use their very own cuddly doll if they are suffering from an illness or have a parent who has passed away.  High school student Eliza Philips,  daughter of a Giving Circle member is currently traveling to Livingstone and carrying six dolls to share with Ray of Hope and Tusa Munyandi.  They will distribute the dolls to needy children in their communities.  We hope Barb and her friends will make more dolls for us to send!

Finding Meaning in a Material World
By Marc Kielburger and Craig Kielburger

"At heart, Me to We is a life philosophy: it offers us a way to live life, and its wisdom is the kind developed over the course of a lifetime. At the most basic level, it embraces the idea that we can all build a better life-and our ideal world-through reaching out to others. In practice, it involves focusing less on "Me", and more on "We"-our communities, our nation and our world as a whole. Today, Me to We is a worldwide movement of people finding purpose through living with compassion, strengthening community and making a commitment to our shared humanity."
